A quick guide before you start
The subject is who or what the sentence is about. Choose the verb form that matches it.
Singular: one person or thing
The student writes every day.
Plural: more than one
The students write every day.
In the present simple, most verbs add -s or -es with he, she, it or one person or thing. Use the base form with I, you, we, they.
| Subject | Be | Have | Do |
|---|---|---|---|
| He / she / it | is | has | does |
| I | am | have | do |
| You / we / they | are | have | do |
In the past: use was with I, he, she, it, and were with you, we, they. In present-simple questions, use do/does + subject + base verb: Does she need help?
Watch the endings: a plural noun often has -s (students), but its present-simple verb usually does not (write). You takes are, have, do even when you mean one person.
